Book Quote of the Week:

My Opinions Are Firm Until They are Not

“Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago.” -Bernard Berenson

My Interpretation: It is not hypocrisy to change your mind – it is growth. Or chaos. Or hormones. Or a sudden shift in lighting. We evolve, we adjust, we pivot. Humans who cling to old opinions just to seem consistent stay stuck. I choose movement.

MY OPINIONS ARE FIRM UNTIL THEY ARE NOT

A STUDY OF MY OWN HYPOCRISY

I need to be honest about something crucial –

I am a woman of principle.

Conviction.

Confidence.

Strength.

Certainty.

Until… I am not.

Because sometimes?

My opinions dissolve faster than a Midwest icicle in April.

I will swear up & down that I believe something – passionately

& then one minor detail will change

& suddenly I am like:

Oh. Never mind. I love it now.”

Let me give you examples,

because this phenomenon is both embarrassing & iconic.

EXAMPLE 1:

“I DO NOT WANT TO GO”

Me, all morning:

I am staying home.

I am tired.

I am cozy.

I am introverted.

Social settings are a crime against my nervous system.

Someone:

We can get food on the way.”

Me:

Give me five minutes to get ready” –

≫ I am exhilarated

≫ I am reborn

≫ I am a woman of the people

≫ I will socialize until midnight

≫ I love humanity

≫ I love life

≫ I love snacks

≫ I love outside

The flip-flop speed?

NASA should study it.

EXAMPLE 2:

“I AM DONE WITH HIM”

Me to my friends:

I am over it.

Dead.

Buried.

Salt in the soil.

I would not text him if my life depended on it.

Him:

Hope you are doing okay today.”

Me:

Oh my god he “cares

he has depth

he is healing

he is reflective

he is intuitive

he deserves another chance

maybe five?

love is real

✧ this is my Roman Empire

I amaze myself.

EXAMPLE 3:

“I HATE THIS OUTFIT”

Me:

This looks stupid.

I hate it.

I look like a disappointed Pinterest board.

Camera:

shows a good angle

Me:

Hold on

hold on

this might be the sexiest thing I have ever worn

I take back everything

I am unstoppable

I am the main character again

bow before me

EXAMPLE 4:

“I AM DEFINITELY NOT BUYING THAT”

Me:

$22.99 for a candle?

That is absurd.

Criminal.

Financial irresponsibility.

Me 14 seconds later:

This candle smells like emotional stability & childhood healing.

It is coming home with me.

I will sell plasma if necessary.

EXAMPLE 5:

“I AM NOT CRYING OVER THIS”

Me:

I am fine.

I am stable.

I am mature.

I do not care.

My emotions are locked up like a high-security vault.

Song:

plays one gentle piano note

Me:

Never mind I am destroyed

who gave this man permission to press the grief button

I am unwell

this is violence

Alexa play it again!

EXAMPLE 6:

“I AM NOT DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS THIS YEAR”

Me:

I am tired.

I do not have the energy.

The tree can wait.

The lights can wait.

I am a relaxed minimalist now.

My kid:

walks in wearing a Santa hat

Me:

Get the bins

Turn on the music

Bring me the ornaments

We are creating memories

Where is the garland

Someone find the fake snow

This is a full-scale holiday event

EXAMPLE 7:

“I AM NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN”

Me after a chaotic day:

This will never happen again.

I have boundaries.

I have structure.

I have dignity.

Life:

offers the same situation in a different font

Me:

Maybe once more…

for scientific study

for closure

for the plot

for the storyline

for character development…

WHAT THIS REALLY SAYS ABOUT ME

It is easy to call it hypocrisy.

People-pleasing.

Indecisiveness.

Chaos energy.

But here is the truth:

I change my mind when I receive new information.

I adapt when something feels better than it looked.

I soften when something touches my heart.

I pivot when something becomes clearer.

I bend where my childhood taught me to break.

Flexibility is not weakness.

It is growth.

& sometimes?

It is just being a millennial woman

whose entire personality is 70% intuition

20% caffeine

10% vibes.

THE FLIP-FLOP IS NOT FAILURE – IT IS HUMAN

The older I get,

the more I realize

rigidity is fear

disguised as control.

People who refuse to change their minds

do not look stable to me –

they look scared.

Scared of being wrong.

Scared of being seen.

Scared of being witnessed evolving.

Scared of admitting the old version of themselves

no longer fits.

I love changing.

I love pivoting.

I love contradicting past versions of myself.

It means I am alive.

It means I am learning.

It means I am choosing the version of me

that exists today

not the version who survived

what life looked like five years ago.

THE HEAD-TILT TRUTH

People will tilt their heads

at how fast you change your mind.

Let them.

Let them gossip.

Let them misunderstand.

You are not required to stay loyal

to a past version of yourself

just because someone else prefers her.

Flip-flop.

Change your mind.

Do a full emotional plot twist.

Do it For The Vine – I mean… 👀🫶🏼

Contradict your old self with pride.

It means you are still growing.

Still listening.

Still alive.

Still choosing.

& honestly?

Everyone should be so lucky

to evolve this often.

Xoxo
